The Opening Act

Doing live broadcasts for a large concert festival, either via the internet or on television, is not easy. Ensuring high quality is even harder. You want the live broadcasts to be clear and free from jitter, latency, or any other issues that may ruin the viewing experience. Moreover, the connection should be able to support other activities apart from recording at the same time. What can you do?

Choosing the right routers can wipe away all these concerns. Realizing this, RTL Radio, the largest radio station in Berlin Germany approached Peplink’s German partner Vitel for assistance in their concert festival broadcast. 

Peplink Takes Center Stage

Vitel came up with a solution based on Peplink’s routers and cellular bonding technology.

Primarily, they put Balance 380, a multi-WAN router at the studio’s headquarters, which became the core of the network. Then an HD4 MBX was set up at the performance venue. This quad-cellular gigabit LTE mobile router can combine the bandwidth of up to 4 cellular links into 1 connection. 

Linking these two devices created a SpeedFusion tunnel between them, where SpeedFusion technology can be implemented. SpeedFusion’s Bandwidth Bonding – a cellular bonding technique – combined the speed of multiple connections, allowing the transfer of a large amount of data at a high speed. This technique helped avoid latency. 

Another appliance played a role just as Balance 380 did, but virtually. That’s FusionHub, a cloud appliance. With it, SpeedFusion connections were established between Peplink devices and popular cloud services or private server hardware. Apart from live broadcasts, all other activities, such as VoIP-related activities, could go on through these connections without impacting the quality of the broadcast. 

In this deployment, Vitel also used an HD2 as a backup. The HD2 is a dual 4G LTE mobile router. If anything went wrong with the HD4 MBX, they could switch over to this router and still keep 2 LTE connections running.

Results that Call for an Encore

With Peplink’s Balance 380 and HD4 MBX, a stable high-speed connection that enabled cellular bonding for smooth live broadcasts was created. All viewers could watch the live show without any jitter or latency. What’s more, FusionHub also formed a separate tunnel with HD4 MBX specifically for phone calls. It safeguarded the flawless quality of the live broadcast even when calls came in. Thanks to Peplink’s router solution, the live broadcast of this concert festival had a satisfactory completion.
