How to Use all Your WAN Links With SpeedFusion and With Load Balancing

SpeedFusion and Load Balancing can both help you fully utilize all your WAN links. The objective of this article is to:

  • Define when to use SpeedFusion and when to use Load Balancing.
  • Show how SpeedFusion and Load Balancing help you fully utilize your WAN links.
  • Introduce a method for testing the combined bandwidth of your different WANs.

When to Use Which?

SpeedFusion: Since SpeedFusion is a site-to-site VPN tunnel, you will need multiple sites equipped with a physical Peplink router (Peplink Balance or a Pepwave MAX) or or a FusionHub virtual appliance. To choose between the Balance and FusionHub, please refer to this article.

Load Balancing: You can perform Load Balance with a physical Peplink router (Peplink Balance or a Pepwave MAX) at a single site.

Combining All Your WAN Links with SpeedFusion

Combine-bandwidth-1

SpeedFusion works by breaking your session into packets, sending the packets across all your available WAN links, and putting the packets back together at the receiving end. As a result, the throughput of your session will be all your WAN links combined.

Utilizing All Your WAN Links with Load Balancing

There are two different ways to fully utilize your WAN links with Load Balancing.

Multi-User Environment

Combine bandwidth 2

When you have multiple users (or one user with multiple devices), your Peplink router will distribute their sessions across your available WAN links to deliver the best performance to each user.

Using Download Management Software

Combine bandwidth 3

If you download a file using a download manager, your download manager will distribute your file across all your available WAN links. Your Peplink router will then use Load Balancing to manage your WAN connections.

Testing the Combined Bandwidth of Your Different WANs

In order to test the combined download speed of all your WAN links, you can use the Broadband Speed Test Tool (click here for details). To do so, please change the Peplink Balance Outbound Policy to Custom by navigating to Network > Outbound Policy.
